Green Wood Working

March 1, 2021 - The first time I carved a piece of wood I jabbed the blade of a Swiss army knife into my palm. I abandoned the craft for 35 years until I felt the inspiration again.

But where to start?

The Spark.

I found the Morakniv “Swedish Knife Grip Sessons” video series featuring Jogge Sundqvist. Which lead me to the book “Swedish Carving Techniques” by Willie Sundqvist. And thereafter I became fascinated with the traditions and techniques of green wood working.

There is a primitive addiction to green wood carving; the connection with nature in finding fresh wood - to studying its grain, hardness and moisture content - to the repetitive cleaving with axe and knife until you are left with an object that can be utilized and enjoyed for decades.

The process is my path.
